How to Take Care of Your Body in Uncertain Times

When we are presented with uncertainity sometimes our own self care can go out the window. However, if we are thrown off a usual routine or experiencing a higher level of stress, your body still needs respect and care. Let's review some ways to take care of your body when things feel hard.

 

Ways to Take Care of Your Body in Uncertain Times

Check in on your sleep schedule

Take this time to catch up on much needed ZzZs either by going to bed earlier, sleeping in later, or both if you’re able to. Sleep is really the best form of rest of recovery for our bodies, yet something we often don’t get enough of. Not only can sleep reduce stress and improve mood and energy, but it can also boost the immune system which can be helpful in times of uncertaintiy and stress. Use this time to slow down and experience the many many benefits of getting enough sleep.

 

Practice joyful movement 

If you’re feeling rested and do want to move, that’s completely fine, too! Just make sure the intention behind the movement is coming from a place of body respect and self-care, rather than a place of dissatisfaction and attempting to change your body.

If the intention behind the exercises adds MORE stress to your day..consider another form of self-care instead!

Joyful movement is about finding pleasure in how we move our bodies and engaging in movement that genuinely brings us joy. Rather than choosing an exercise based on external factors like calories burned, heart rate, distance, or pace, we encourage you to choose ones based on internal cues such as how your body feels and its energy levels.  

Above all, remember that there is no such thing as “good or bad” physical activity. Any movement is good movement! 

 

Eat Regularly 

Though your daily routine has likely changed, your body still requires meals and snacks each day in order to provide you with the energy and nutrients to function at its best. Without adequate nourishment you will likely feel increasingly run down or even more stressed out in uncertain times. 

Fueling your body with satisfying meals and snacks is one of the best ways to take care of you! Give yourself full permission to eat and nourish yourself, even in times of uncertainty. If you are findind that you're struggling with intrusive thoughts around meal or snack times, get in contact with us so we can best support you at this time. 

 

Evaluate current coping skills

This may take a little self reflection. Try asking yourself:  "When I am feeling stressed out - what are the things I turn to?"

On a daily basis our bodies are doing what they can to keep up alive and safe. This may mean the development of what we call maladaptive (or potentially unhelpful) coping skills as your body's way at one point in time to help you deal with emotions that came up for you.

Some of these things you may not even recognize on your own, that's why it can be really helpful to talk with a professional and review how you are currently able to process emotions and if the skills are currently serving you. If not, it may be time to try to incorporate new ideas to help you feel supported and able to sit with and move through your emotions.

 

With so much going on, this may seem like a difficult time to focus on yourself. The truth is that by taking some time during this uncertainty to slow down, calm down, and just breathe, you’ll hopefully feel better, more at peace, and ready to stay more grounded during this stressful time!
