Does Insurance Cover a Nutritionist?

FAQ

May 30, 2023

Something that we hear from all of our clients is - “does my insurance cover a nutritionist?”

Navigating insurance companies can be daunting and draining - especially when we don't know what to say or where to start. We hear and deeply resonate with your confusion when it comes to insurance companies and your individual benefits.

We’ve broken down a few ways you can leverage your insurance benefits and clearly communicate with your insurance provider while working with NourishRX below. For more specific details regarding insurance benefits download our Insurance Benefits Guide here

How to navigate insurance when working with nutritionist:

Know what insurance your nutritionist accepts

Here at NourishRX we accept most plans from the following insurance providers:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • MassGeneral Brigham HealthPlans (formerly AllWays)
  • Tufts Commercial Plans
  • Harvard Pilgrim
  • United HealthCare.

know your individual benefits when seeking nutritionist services

One on one Medical Nutritional Counseling is the only service eligible for insurance coverage at NourishRX. This is strictly a medical service and we cannot bill your care under behavioral health. Your coverage may be diagnosis dependent or have limitations such as the number of appointments covered per year.

However, each individual plan is different so before seeing any team member we help walk you through contacting your insurance company to determine your individual benefits.

If your health insurance company is out of network with NourishRX, you can still inquire about out of network benefits for potential reimbursement directly from your insurance company after paying out of pocket for services.

After privately paying for services, NourishRX can provide you with a superbill. A superbill is a coded receipt with all of the information about your session that the insurance company needs to verify the service. You can submit this receipt to your insurance company and work directly with them for possible reimbursement.

Check to see if you have FSA or HSA funds

Your insurance plan may include FSA/HSA funds which can be used on copays, deductibles and payment for additional services such as digital courses. It’s always best to ask about this option with your insurance provider to ensure you are getting the most out of your insurance plan.

contact your insurance provider yearly

Insurance plans can change year to year so it's always best to reach out directly to your insurance provider at the start of each plan year to inquire about any changes to your benefits. Staying on top of your benefits will help you avoid unnecessary or unexpected charges.

know how to contact your insurance provider

The best way to contact your insurance company is typically using the phone number listed on the back of your health insurance card. Although the website might have general information about your plan, it’s always best to speak directly to an agent to figure out the specifics for medical nutritional counseling.

If you are ever uncomfortable or unsure about the information you’ve received from an insurance agent, you can always call back and ask for another agent for clarification. You can also reach out to the NourishRX Front Desk to help decipher the information you’ve received. We’ve also created a handy free Guide to Insurance that will walk you through the ins and outs of how to determine your benefits and get the most out of your plan.
