What is the Difference Between a Nutritionist vs Dietitian

FAQ

May 30, 2023

Ah, the age old question of the difference between a nutritionist vs dietitian. There have been countless times that clients have come in and asked us this very question. And it’s an important one!

Normally the terms nutritionist vs dietitian are use interchangeably. And although we admit that we use this language from time to time, there is a big difference between a nutritionist vs dietitian. While both nutritionists and dietitians may support individuals with their nutrition needs there are some critical differences that should be considered. Let’s dive in below.

What is the difference between a nutritionist vs dietitian

Nutritionist vs Dietitian have different training criteria

In order for one to sit for their boards to become a dietitian they must:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree or higher qualification at a regionally accredited university or college in the U.S. Effective January 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration will require a minimum of a master’s degree to be eligible to take the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN).
  • Have the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) or the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accredit or approve their coursework
  • Complete 1,200 hours of supervised practice through an ACEND-accredited practice program
  • Pass a national examination that the Commission on Dietetic Registration administer
  • Complete continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration on a cyclical basis.

Technically, although there are agencies that individuals can become certified nutritionists through the qualifications for training vary. Some states do not require certification, so it is possible for essentially anyone in those states to offer nutrition advice.

Bottom line - there is much more regulation in obtaining and maintaining the title of a Registered Dietitian.

What they are licensed to treat varies…a lot

Dietitians are licensed to treat specific health conditions such as eating disorders and other diagnoses by providing Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Nutritionists, depending on their certification and training, are likely more so giving general nutrition advice.

Insurance coverage will differ depending on you seeing a nutritionist vs a dietitian

Insurance providers often cover visits to Registered Dietitians for specific health conditions. In 2020, the U.S. government recognized that MNT can help treat a range of chronic conditions. Typically services through a nutritionist would be considered “coaching” and are not covered by insurance.

To sum it up, dietitians are qualified to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy that is likely covered by your insurance provider and their qualifications and specialized studies are much more regulated.

Services through a nutritionist are likely not going to be covered by insurance and qualifications and experience may vary. You should always check that a practitioner has adequate training for your individual needs before signing up for their services.
