What Do I Do With My HSA/FSA Funds?

Nutrition

December 12, 2022

Ah yes, it’s that time of year again. The trees are bare, the holiday tunes are playing and your HSA/FSA funds are about to expire. With so much going on around the holiday season many people can forget that they have stowed away money that needs to be spent.

Fear not, we are here to help walk you through all of the services that you can purchase to ensure your money is being put to good use.

But first, let’s start with the basics.

HSA/FSA Funds

what is an hsa/fsa fund?

Health Savings Account:

A Health Savings Account, or HSA, is a type of savings account that lets you set aside money on a pre-tax basis for qualified medical expenses. By using these untaxed dollars to pay for health expenses, you may be able to lower your overall health care costs.

You may only contribute to your HSA if you are part of a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). These funds are more flexible and do not expire once the new year rolls around.

Flexible Spending Account:

A Flexible Spending Account, or FSA , is a little different. This is still a savings account that you put money into to pay for out of pocket health expenses. You still do not pay taxes on this money. Your employer may contribute to your FSA, but they are not required to.

With an FSA, you will submit a claim to the FSA through your employer with proof of medical expenses and a statement that it has not been covered by your plan. You will then get reimbursed for your costs. Your FSA plan will be specific to your company.

The main consideration with an FSA is that you will have to use it within the plan year. If you don’t, those are funds that are lost.

how can I spend my hsa/fsa fund?

Great question! You can use your HSA and FSA on health care expenses such as: copays and deductibles (typically not for insurance premiums). Coverage can also include: certain medication, menstruation supplies, certain shampoos, bandaids, sunscreen, prescription reading glasses. The list goes on!

However, it does not stop at just medical supplies or copays. You can also use these funds for certain out of pocket packages through providers that your insurance may not cover.

HSA/FSA Funds
