Do I Need a Dietitian if I Have a Therapist? Understanding the Role of Nutrition in Eating Disorder Recovery

Eating Disorders

March 10, 2026

Many people in eating disorder recovery wonder: “If I already see a therapist, do I also need a dietitian?” The short answer: yes! Therapy and nutrition support serve different, but complementary, roles in recovery.

Do I Need a Dietitian if I Have a Therapist?

why therapy alone isn't enough

Therapists provide emotional support, coping strategies, and guidance for mental health. They help address:

  • Anxiety, depression, or obsessive thoughts around food

  • Body image concerns

  • Emotional triggers for disordered eating

While therapy is essential, it cannot address the physical effects of restriction or malnutrition, such as nutrient deficiencies, slowed metabolism, or disrupted hunger cues.

how a dietitian supports recovery

We could write a whole book about this one! But we'll try to give you the concise version.

A non-diet, eating disorder specialized dietitian is an integral part of an eating disorder treatment team. I know we're bias but hear us out!

We can support with...

  • Designing meal plans that restore nutritional balance

  • Rebuilding healthy hunger and fullness cues

  • Addressing weight restoration or stabilization safely

  • Providing guidance for meal planning in daily life

  • Supporting energy needs for mental and physical recovery

When therapy and nutrition counseling work together, clients often recover faster and more sustainably because both emotional and physiological needs are addressed.

the bottom line

Consider seeking a dietitian if you notice:

  • Intense hunger or confusion about portions

  • Ongoing fatigue or digestive issues

  • Anxiety around meals or food choices

  • Nutrient deficiencies identified by labs

  • Difficulty maintaining a healthy weight or energy balance

Our team at NourishRX works to create a safe and open safe for our clients to explore their relationship with food. We can provide as much or little structure as feels helpful to meet your nutritional goals in recovery!

signs you could benefit from meeting with a dietitian

Therapy is powerful for mental health, but nutrition recovery is equally important. Dietitians complement therapists by addressing the physical and biological aspects of healing.

We always encourage our clients to have more than one support person on their recovery team. In the long run, you’ll get the most out of recovery by working with the right professional for each area of need. Just like you wouldn’t see your cardiologist for all your digestive concerns (you’d see a gastroenterologist) each specialist brings unique expertise. That doesn’t mean your cardiologist isn’t helping; together, they form a cohesive team supporting your overall health.

Together, therapy and nutrition support form a holistic approach to eating disorder recovery, supporting both your mind and your body.

Reach out to our team today to see how we can support you on your journey towards a more peaceful relationship with food and body!
